Kathakali   IYIfn
Kathakali is a very popular dance form of Kerala. It is actually a dance drama performed mostly by male artists. The actors convey the message of the story through very expressive facial movements and mudras (hand gesture).

The background singers provide the dialogue. The face of the Kathakali artist is colourfully painted to suit the role. The painted face is often mistaken for a mask.

Kathakali has now achieved world wide popularity. It is believed that this dance form took shape in the 17th century. It was ‘Ramanattam’ started by Kottarakkara Thampuran which later changed to Kathakali.

The characters of Kathakali are divided into different categories. Pacha, Kathi, Kari, Thaadi, Minukku are the five classifications. Each character has specific dress and makeup.

Kerala Kalamandalam, near Thrissur is a major Kathakali training Centre.
