Vattezhuthu, Koolezhuthu, Malayanma were the scripts used in Malayalam long before.

Grandha lipi was another convention. These script conventions could be considered as the protoforms of the present.

Malayalam belongs to the Dravidian family of languages. Initially the Dravida language had only 30 letters - 12 vowels and 18 consonants.

It was from Sanskrit that the vowels Ru, RuRu, nu, nunu and the consonants kh, ch,

s, h were integrated and the script assumed its present form. It consists of 16 vowels and 37 consonants (53 letters). Malayalam is one of the Indian languages with the maximum number of letters.
RuRu, nu, nunu are not used generally. However the script has been modified from time to time. In the recently modified version, there are 15 vowels and 36 consonants (51 letters).
